What is a Dental Emergency?

As the coronavirus continues to dramatically impact lives, please know that we stand with you, your family, and our entire community. This is a difficult time for everyone, but we’re all in this together and together we’ll make it through. Safety is our primary concern – for you, your loved ones, our families, our team, and our community. We genuinely care for those we serve and those we serve alongside.

The ADA released the following guide for you to know what's considered a dental emergency.

If you need a statement to send out to your patients explaining what constitutes a dental emergency, feel free to use the following statement.

[We encourage you to adjust this document to fit your practice.]

A Statement for Your Patients

To best serve our community during these difficult times, we remain open to treat dental emergencies.

But, you may be asking, “what constitutes a dental emergency?”

Principle #1

If it can be rescheduled, it’s not an emergency.

  • Exams, cleanings, x-rays
  • Cosmetic treatment
  • Braces or Invisalign
  • Tooth whitening
  • Tooth extractions (as long serious tooth pain is not involved)

Principle #2

If it involves pain, infection or immediate consequences, it’s probably an emergency.

  • Infected gums with pain and swelling
  • Trauma involving jaw or teeth (broken, knocked out)
  • Wire braces causing extra pain or discomfort
  • Cancer-related treatment (denture adjustments, biopsy, etc…)
  • Post-surgical care

If you need emergency dental care, please don’t go to the Emergency Room. Contact us immediately. The ADA has asked us to focus on emergency oral healthcare to help lighten the load for hospitals.

"Concentrating on emergency dental care will allow us to care for our emergency patients and alleviate the burden that dental emergencies would place on hospital emergency departments."

- American Dental Association

If you or someone you know needs emergency dental care, please have them contact us.  If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, we’ll be glad to advise you.

We’re all in this together and we stand ready to serve.
