Why Your SEO Can’t Start Until You Do

A STARTUP DENTIST'S GUIDE TO SEO  //  ARTICLE 1 OF 3

In This Article: How one awkward client call led to a phenomenal three-part SEO Guide

This article is for startup practices, and we know yours can feel like an “everything everywhere all at once” situation. But you don't have to read this all in one sitting; bookmark it, share it with your practice manager, or come back to it when your business is fully built out! Each step stands on its own, but they build on each other too. Here’s what we’ve got for you:

  1. The truth about SEO timing
The web is full of inaccuracies, but we’ve got your back.
  2. Your GBP and your website: two very different jobs
They're like your eyebrows; they’re cousins, not twins
  3. What you can (and can't) do before you open
A clear breakdown so you're not guessing… or panicking
  4. What the first 90 days actually look like
    A bit anti-climactic, and that's completely normal
  5. The one thing only you can do
Your highest-leverage move, and it costs nothing
  6. Life after 90 days
The long game, and why it's worth playing

A while back, I was on a call with a startup dentist. I learned very quickly that he was not ready for most of our SEO services since his practice… didn’t exactly exist yet. It was still being built out, the phone lines weren’t connected, and the walls weren't even up yet. He'd come in expecting a head start, and instead I was explaining that we couldn't really do much until his practice was actually open. That his authority score starts from zero. That bigger, more established practices have a natural advantage just from existing longer. That SEO, done right, is a slow build. By the end of the call, he was genuinely upset.

I felt awkward, defeated, and overall terrible. Not because I was wrong — I stand by every word I said — but because nobody had prepared him for it.

That call is the reason this article exists.

I'm writing this so you don't have to find out the hard way like he did. You deserve the full picture before you're already in the middle of it. So let's get into it! All the nitty-gritty details for you to enjoy from your favorite SEO nerd. 😊

_STEP 01

The Honest Truth About SEO Timing

Here's what most people expect to hear: "Start early! Get a head start! Plant the seeds before you open!"

The "start early" advice isn't completely wrong, but it’s not exactly right either. The reality for a dental practice comes down to something Google is firm about:

The most important piece of Local SEO is your Google Business Profile, and you can't have a fully functional Google Business Profile (GBP) until you have a fully functional business.

📋 DIRECT FROM GOOGLE'S OWN GUIDELINES

"To qualify for a Business Profile on Google, a business must make in-person contact with customers during its stated hours."

A practice with no patients and a construction crew still finishing the walls doesn't clear that bar. Google allows a “coming soon” listing, but it still won’t show up in searches until your opening day, and it won't carry the weight that matters.

So "start before you open" really means: do the prep work. Get your website built. Get your listing claimed. Have everything staged and ready. The actual momentum starts when you do.

_STEP 02

Your GBP and Your Website: Two Very Different Jobs

Okay, this is the part I genuinely get nerdy about, so bear with me. When someone searches for a dentist on Google, two separate things are happening in two completely different lanes, and mixing them up is where a lot of the confusion comes from.

LANE 01
Organic Search = Your Website

The traditional search results page. Your website earns visibility here based on how helpful, well-built, and trustworthy it is. Searches like "how much does Invisalign cost" or "dentist who's good with anxious patients" — that's your website's moment.

LANE 02
Local Search = Your GBP

The map-based results for searches like "dentist near me." This is GBP territory. The crazy thing is that GBP can actually rank in local search without a website at all, but it doesn't work the other way around. GBP is its own thing.

💡 THE TLDR IF YOU'RE SKIMMING

GBP = local visibility. Website = organic search visibility. You can show up in either lane without the other, but when both are working together they make each other significantly stronger.

So how do they help each other?

When both are healthy and pointing to each other, your website and GBP send Google a much more complete picture. Your GBP says: this is a real business with real patients. Your website says: I am a real expert with real answers.

_STEP 03

What You Can (and Can't) Do Before You Open

After all that, you're probably wondering: "Why are we talking now if I have to wait? Can I do anything before I open?” The answer is a resounding “Yes!” The pre-opening window is an important time; you just have to know the right order and combination of tasks to complete.

✓ What We CAN Do Before You Open

  • Build your website with real content: Service pages, FAQs, blog posts — all of it can be written and indexed before day one. The earlier it's live, the earlier Google starts paying attention.
  • Push your info to directories: Your name, address, and phone number can go out to listings like Apple Maps, Yelp, and others before you open. It takes a little while for your info to be pushed out, so the earlier you can feed them the information, the better.
  • Create Your “Coming Soon” GBP listing: As long as you have walls, a permanent sign, and your phone system set up, you can create your GBP and fill it out with your information. If Google needs to verify your profile, then you have all the resources you need to verify it.
    • When it’s verified, you can set the opening date on the profile to your actual opening date. This will help the profile remain idle until you’re open for business. DO NOT set the opening date as blank and set your opening hours; this will be a violation of Google guidelines and possibly get your account suspended.

𝘅  What You CAN’T Do Before You Open

  • Take Your GBP Live: Google needs proof of a real, operating business with real patients. Until that's true, your GBP can't do its full job.
  • Signal Active Engagement: Calls tracked, answers in the Q&A section, posts live — these only accumulate once your practice is open and running.
  • Ask for Reviews: Reviews before you even open is sketchy. This is obviously a no-go. More on this in Step 5.

∞ And Some Things That Just Take Time

  • Google's trust in your site: Trust deepens over months and years of consistent signals, and it can't be rushed. The good news is, your competitors can’t fake their way to the top either.
  • Reviews volume: Even if you ask every patient after every visit, a significant review count takes time. Which brings us to the fun part...

_STEP 04

What the First 90 Days Actually Look Like

Most people assume that once they are open and fully set up with SEO, that calls and appointment requests will start pouring in. Ironically, while you’re waiting for the party to start,  the first 90 days are going to feel suspiciously quiet. No traffic spikes, no ranking jumps, no dramatic dashboard moment. All of that is completely normal.

Here's what's actually happening behind the scenes while your dashboard looks boring:

Days 1–30: Google Finds You. Stays Quiet About It.

Your GBP goes live and gets verified. Your website — already built and indexed from before you opened — starts collecting real engagement signals for the first time. Your directory listings, submitted pre-opening, are now backed by an actual open business, which gives them real weight.

Days 30–60: The First Green Lights

GBP discovery views start appearing, meaning people are finding your listing through category searches, not just by typing your practice name. This is a big moment, because it shows that your business is gaining trust with Google. Impressions in Search Console are climbing week over week. Your first reviews are coming in and starting to shape how Google perceives your prominence in the area.

Days 60–90: Okay, NOW It Gets Exciting

Organic traffic becomes an actual measurable number. Your service pages start climbing for lower-competition local searches. And if things are clicking — your first organic lead comes through. A call or a form submission from someone who found you on Google without clicking a single ad. That's the moment.

🔍 AND ABOUT GOOGLING YOURSELF...

Once you're open, you'll get the urge to search for your own practice only to wonder why you don't show up where you expected. The thing is, Google personalizes every result based on your location, history, and device. There's no single fixed position everyone sees, and two people searching the same thing rarely get the same results — so don’t panic! The goal is consistent visibility for the right people in your area, not a #1 ranking for one specific search.

_STEP 05

The One Thing Only You Can Do

If you’ve enlisted our help with SEO, our team handles the technical work, the content, the directory listings, and the strategy. But there's one thing no tool or agency can do for you:

⭐️ Ask your patients for Google reviews. ⭐️

The best way to ask for a review is face-to-face. If there’s a patient you’re building a good relationship with, slip it into casual conversation! If you have easy-going banter already, it shouldn’t feel formal. (#NormalizeAskingForReviews). Something honest that’s part of real conversation can make a bigger impact than automated, after-appointment texts (though those can help too). Try: “Hey, we're a brand-new practice and Google reviews make a huge difference for us right now. Would you be willing to leave us one?”

Patients who hear that from their actual provider follow through at rates no software can match. To them, your ask carries personal weight and they feel like they can make a difference.

You, being cute and bashful while asking patients for reviews.

_STEP 06

Life After 90 Days

The first 90 days are about building the foundation. After that, here's what the longer story looks like for practices that stay consistent — and why it's worth the patience:

Months 3–6

Organic traffic becomes a real number. Service pages earn consistent local visibility. Organic leads (calls and form submissions not from ads) start showing up regularly. SEO starts feeling less like faith and more like a science.

Months 6–12

Practices that stayed consistent with an active GBP, steady reviews, and quality content are standing out among their competitors. Organic search becomes a genuine, reliable source of new traffic every month.

Year 2+

SEO becomes your most cost-effective patient channel. Year one's work compounds. New content builds on a strategic foundation instead of starting from scratch. The gap between you and a competitor who started later gets harder and harder for them to close. This is why we play the long game.

📍 A COMPASS, NOT A GUARANTEE

Competitive markets — major metros, dense suburbs, areas with established DSOs on every corner — will push toward the longer end of those timelines. Less competitive markets often see traction faster. What stays consistent no matter what: the practices that stick it out long enough to reach month six almost always look back and say it was worth it.

We're Just Getting Started

Now that you have the real picture on SEO timing and what to expect, the next articles in this series are going to get a lot more hands-on with specific steps, specific tools, and the things that actually show up in your day-to-day as a practice owner.

Here's what's coming:

  • Your SEO Jumpstart Checklist
Which directory listings to claim and in what order, how to write a review response that actually works, what your GBP should look like on day one.
  • Domain Authority & Backlinks, Demystified
What that score actually means for a local dental practice (hint: a 9 is not a disaster), how it builds over time, and what you and your marketing team can do to move it in the right direction.
